Doyle Swing-Batten Main Sail

When I purchased Bremer Speck around 2000 she came with mostly original sails. That meant the sails were about 15 years old.

This showed when I sailed her across the Atlantic in 2002 from Holland to Boston.

The Genoa tore during the Bay of Biscay crossing in 50+ knots of winds and we had to divert into Brest to have it repaired.

A couple of months after arriving in Boston, I decided to replace all the sails.
I went with Doyle Sails and opted for their "Swing-Batten" main sail.

When ever the discussions turn to furling mainsails, opponents criticize the lack of sail area and lack of performance.

Technology has helped to address this and as you can see in the pictures here below, there can no longer be any talk
about lack of sail size.

I have placed the original mainsail on top of the new sail. The difference is quite obvious. I have gained about 30%
more sail size and the roach is nicely supported by the swing battens.

As for performance, while this is certainly debatable, I can say that I am extremely happy with my new mainsail and
have not regretted the investment.

A picture is worth a thousand words! The installation sequence is shown in the thumbnail photos here below.
